PORCUPINE DOME
 by NL7XH

April 2, 2000

Jerry Curry KL7EDK,  Billy  Conner AL7FQ , & Benny NL7XH  got to mile post 101 about 12 noon.  Jerry and Bill went up the road just opposite the Quest checkpoint cabins.  It took them about 20 minuets to get to the base of Porky and about 20 minutes to get to the site.

The batteries all looked good except one cell had some frozen water in it.   The battery voltage on the batteries read 13.8 volts.   They managed to put water in all of the batteries except the bottom front two it was just too difficult to get to them without disconnecting all
of the wires, and since the rest of the cells looked good (just needed a bit of topping off) it did not seem prudent to disturb the system any more than necessary.

They removed the defective Kenwood 79A  ( it has a blown 2 meter output module) and replaced it with another one that now is set for 146.700 negative split.  We have a Mirage BD 35 amp and with the Kenwood 79A set at just about a watt the system output on both 2 meters and 440 is about 12 watts. It took about 1 hour on site.  The power input to the Mirage was soldered just before the load fuse. (the mirage has it's own fuse). Checked the system out with a QSO with AL7HT Mark Richards on the Kandic river, he contacted George KL0CK with great results.  Billy and Jerry buttoned up the system after all checked out.

The return snowmachine trip took a bit longer than 2 hours.  Billy and Jerry took a different path on the way down and had lots of problems with the machines getting in trouble on the overflow on the Porcupine creek, and they just could not resist playing in the snow that did not have any tracks on it.

When we install the next two we will send a 10 amp fuse with the amp so we can but the power leads on the terminal strip.
