The Yukon Quest 2008 25 Years of Celebrating a Tradition of Dog Mushing & Ham Radio working together

If you ever wanted to get involved in amateur radio - this is The Event. The Yukon Quest provides ample opportunity for getting "on the air" to practice radio skills, verify that you can actually communicate with other hams and also provides potential emergency and disaster communications and response experience. Come out and help celebrate this event and hone your Communication skills.

Field Communications...Tracking The Mushers

The 2008 Yukon Quest provides a two week window of opportunity for new AARC Hams seeking self-satisfaction and community involvement. For the newly licensed technician, the Quest provides an unparalleled experience in finding out what Ham Radio is all about. The AARC members staff the Fairbanks Visitors Log Cabin 24 hours a day - 7 days a week for an approximate 2 week time period - with most shifts lasting 4 hours. This means we need many volunteers to fill the shift periods. The Log Cabin is fully equipped with radio equipment, internet access, fax and phone. Working in tandem with another experienced Ham, technicians have the ability to find out how Ham radio serves the Alaskan community.

Log Cabin Communications...Monitoring Everything

We also need other volunteers - some to man remote checkpoints, some to relay radio information and a few hearty souls to stand upon the local Chena River bridges and radio in a report as the first mushers begin to arrive in Fairbanks.

Use Your Ham License and Participate

For 2008, the race begins in Fairbanks, AK. The 2007 Quest mushers will run a 1000+ mile course to Whitehorse, YT, thorough a variety of checkpoints, a few of which are the same as the Junior Quest, namely (Laurance Road - North Pole), and the (Chena Nordale Bridge).

Arctic Amateur Radio Club Hams provide support at all Alaskan checkpoints, with one or more intrepid AARC Hams providing radio communications along the trail, physically attempting to stay ahead of the mushers. Additionally, AARC members staff the Fairbanks Visitors Log Cabin where we provide 24/7 "real-time" trail communications, safety, emergency communications and musher positions.
